Private Lessons

Private Lessons at Boran Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

The Program

One-on-one instruction with Professor Boran, scheduled around you.

A private lesson is the fastest way to improve. With no class to share, the hour is built entirely around you: a position you keep getting stuck in, preparation for a specific competition, or simply learning the fundamentals at your own pace before stepping into a group class.

Lessons are taught by Professor James Boran himself: a 6th-degree black belt, IBJJF and USBJJF certified, and one of the Dirty Dozen, the first twelve Americans ever promoted to black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He received his blue and purple belts from Royce, Rorion and Rickson Gracie, and his brown and black belts from Joe Moreira. There is very little in jiu-jitsu he has not seen.

Two people can share a lesson for $120 per hour, which works well for training partners, couples, or a parent learning alongside their child.

This class is built for

  • Anyone nervous about starting in a group setting
  • Competitors preparing for a specific tournament
  • Students stuck at a particular position
  • Training partners or couples who want to learn together
  • Parents wanting to train alongside their child
  • Anyone whose schedule does not fit the class times

What a Class Actually Looks Like

Nobody likes walking into a room without knowing what happens. Here is the whole session, start to finish.

  1. 01
    Before you start

    A conversation

Professor Boran asks what you want out of the hour: a problem position, a competition coming up, or a complete introduction from scratch.

  2. 02
    First 15 min

    Diagnosis

Light work so he can see what you actually do under pressure. Most students are surprised by what this reveals; it is usually not the problem they thought they had.

  3. 03
    Next 35 min

    Focused instruction

Detailed correction and drilling on exactly the thing that needs fixing, at whatever depth you need. No waiting for a room of thirty people to catch up.

  4. 04
    Last 10 min

    A plan

What to work on in group classes before your next session, so the hour keeps paying off after you leave.

How privates fit alongside classes

Private lessons work best in combination with group training rather than instead of it. The private hour fixes the specific problem; the group classes give you the volume and the variety of partners you need to make it stick.

A common pattern is one private a month alongside regular class attendance. Some students take a handful of privates to get started and then move fully into group classes. Both work, and Professor Boran will tell you honestly which he thinks suits you.

Questions

Questions People Ask Before They Start

How much does a private lesson cost?

A private lesson is $100 per hour with Professor Boran. Two people can share a lesson for $120 per hour, which works out considerably cheaper each.

Do I need to be a member to book a private?

No. Privates are available to members and non-members alike, and taking one is a common way to try the academy before committing to a membership.

Who teaches the private lessons?

Professor James Boran personally, a 6th-degree black belt and one of the Dirty Dozen, with a competition record including multiple Pan American and World Master titles.

Can my child take a private lesson?

Yes. Privates work well for a child who is nervous about joining a group, or for a student wanting extra help before a competition. A parent can share the lesson at the two-person rate.

How do I book a private lesson?

Call the academy on 714-751-7505 and arrange a time directly with Professor Boran. Privates are scheduled around the group class timetable.
